Neglect of poultry

Although a chicken may not be a dog, they are still abused everyday around the country, and yet, what do we do to stop it? Chickens that are used for egg production are the most abused of all farm animals. Yet, what do we do? Did you know that 280 million hens laid 77.3 billion eggs in 2007? That’s a lot of eggs! Also, due to male chickens not having the ability to lay eggs,  roosters have little value in the egg industry. Because of that, 260 million male chickens are killed each year upon hatching. Yet, what do we do?

A normal chicken that can get up in the morning and walk around, run, and play with other hens, can live 5-8 years. But a chicken that is used for production of eggs and meat, and is sitting in cages or being packed by other chickens, can live 1-2 years. Yet what do we do? “Chickens and turkeys are exempt from the humane slaughter act, a federal law that requires some animals to be rendered insensible to pain before slaughter.”  According to Farm Sanctuary. 95% of egg-laying hens spend their lives in battery cages. Battery cages commonly hold 5–10 birds, and each chicken may be given an amount of floor space equivalent to less than a sheet of letter-size paper. Constantly rubbing against and standing on wire cages, hens suffer severe feather loss, and their bodies become covered with bruises.

Yet what do we do? Nothing, but there is one thing I ask. Don't promote businesses like these.. Donate to the Farms Sanctuary. You don't have to just donate money, you can donate supplies and much more. The Farm Sanctuary rescues farm animals of neglect.

three great websites to use

Here I am posting my top 3 websites that I go to for help. These sites below will help you so just read through the description below and then go to them to find out more about them. And feel free to leave comments.

My top 3 websites to go to for information

Welp hatchery
Welp hatchery is a great hatchery that I like to use when I buy chickens. They have a great variety of breeds and on the plus side they organize it in category like, egg layer, meat breeds, silkies, bantams, ducks, quails, etc. etc. And they also sell books and supplies. I highly recommend this site.
backyard chicken
Backyard Chicken is a great site to go and search your question and it will pop up your answer. When I had a broody hen and I didn't know whether I should feed her or what I should do, I went to Backyard chicken. It's like having another tool in your toolbox!
egg cartons
This site does not only sell egg cartons but it also sells brooder equipment, poultry feeders and waterers, signs and much more. Although I think it would be cheaper to buy egg cartons at a local store or even tell your friends to save the egg cartons, this site I would go for signs and customizing my egg cartons to the name I want on the carton for example " Palme's farm fresh eggs."

about the blog

Hello my name is Austin Palme and this is a blog for chicken enthusiast. This blog will post answers to any questions and will post pictures of the chickens and chicken coops that i have. To sum it up if it has anything to do with chickens eventually it will be on here. And feel free to comment. Have fun!!
